Edgar Davids encountered a couple of fellow ex-Ajax stars when he stopped by at Hotspur Way this week – including former team-mate Jan Vertonghen.
The legendary midfielder, who scored once in 44 appearances for us between 2005 and 2007 before re-joining Dutch giants Ajax – having previously spent five highly successful years there at the start of the 1990s, was a welcome visitor to our Training Centre on Wednesday.
He was consequently re-united with Jan, having played alongside our Belgian international defender during his second spell in Amsterdam.
And the now 42-year-old underlined how Jan’s ability shone through, even at that early stage of his career.
“Vertonghen was already gifted when we played together at Ajax and he did very, very well,” said Edgar, who won three consecutive Eredivisie titles and the 1995 Champions League during his early career.
“I remember a game where we had problems and we had to play against PSV. They had a guy called Jefferson Farfan who was amazing, but if you had Jan in the side you knew you could always rely on him. It was 0-0 in the end so he helped to keep a clean sheet.
“In Jan’s position it’s not only about being strong but it’s also about being aware and positioning yourself tactically.
“He did that very well, that resulted in him being transferred to Spurs and now he’s playing very well. I hope he continues doing that for the Club.”
Around the time that Edgar’s second stint with Ajax ended, a young Christian Eriksen was making his way in the Dutch side’s famed academy set-up.
Although Edgar never played first team football with him, the ex-Juventus man was still full of praise for our dynamic Dane.
“He has a couple of gifts that you can’t teach,” Edgar added. “It’s just quality that he’s got and the way he moves between the lines and sees the passes is extraordinary.”
Finally, Edgar had a few words about our Training Centre after visiting our Enfield base for the first time: “It’s amazing! I’ve seen a lot of facilities but this is by far the best I’ve ever encountered.”
