Double-winner Peter visits the Training Centre

21 September 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

One of the heroes of our 1961 Double-winning side was a welcome visitor at the Training Centre on Friday.

Peter Baker, who formed a key part of our all-conquering team of the early 1960s and played 342 times for us between 1953-65, was given a guided tour of Hotspur Way as our staff and players readied themselves for Sunday afternoon’s match at Cardiff City.

The 81-year-old was a keen observer at training and, showing his never-ending enthusiasm, even put himself forward as an impromptu ball boy by voluntarily collecting a couple of stray footballs while Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas masterminded a session with the squad ahead of the Cardiff trip!

Former full-back Peter, who in addition to the League and FA Cup Double in 1961 also won a second FA Cup with us a year later, plus the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963, also shared a laugh with Assistant Head Coach Steffen Freund, who was fully appreciative of the remarkable achievements of Peter and his former team-mates.

Striker Jermain Defoe was also clearly delighted to meet Peter when the two bumped into each other in the corridors of the Training Centre on Friday afternoon.

Peter - pictured below (back row, third from left) with Bill Nicholson's famous side - said that the marvellous facilities now at the players’ disposal were 'certainly different' to the environment during his own playing days!

We continue to wish Peter the very best.
