Doc's anxious wait
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Gary Doherty has admitted he's on tenterhooks waiting to find out if he's in Ireland's World Cup squad.
'Doc' will be put out of his misery either way on Tuesday morning when Mick McCarthy names his 23-man squad for Japan and South Korea at a press conference in Dublin.
After seven months out with a broken leg, the big defender shot back into the international limelight by grabbing a goal in Ireland's latest friendly against the USA.
A late call-up to that squad, Doc headed home the winner in the final minutes after coming on as substitute.
McCarthy suggested after that friendly that it would be 'unlikely' that Gary would make the final cut but his sheer versatility - he can play in attack, as well his preferred role in defence - means he must have a chance.
Speaking after training at Spurs Lodge on Monday, Doc said: "I know it's a long shot. I'm hoping to be stand-by or something like that but you never know in football, stranger things have happened.
"It's a funny situation to be in, especially when you're not sure.
"I haven't heard from Mick yet and I don't whether to take that as good news or not.
"He's already said that it's unlikely that I'll be going but I still have hopes.
"I've been out a long time so I know it will be difficult for him to pick me but maybe the goal might have persuaded him. I don't know.
"I'll be gutted to miss out but I'll recover from that because I know I've been inujured for so long and, hopefully, they'll be a few more World Cup squads to get into."
