Doc's a wanted man

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Gary Doherty is a wanted man.

Thursday’s press day at Spurs Lodge underlined the impact he has made in the first two months of 2001.

After talking to the Official Spurs Website and in-house television station THTV, the 20-year-old was interviewed by Sky Sports, radio, the Sun and the Daily Star.

More importantly though, Doherty is clearly wanted by both his domestic and international managers as Spurs boss George Graham willingly extolled his virtues in his press conference and Mick McCarthy selected him again for the full Republic of Ireland squad for the friendly against Denmark on February 28.

Reflecting on amazing start to the year, Doherty admitted: “Since the start of the year things have taken off for me. I was struggling at the start of the season but since the Newcastle game it has gone so well.

“It was great news to get into the Ireland squad because the last two times I’ve been involved it has been very much a depleted squad.

“Looking at it this time it is just about the strongest squad Mick (McCarthy) could have picked, so I’m delighted to be in it.”

Now his attention will happily turn to the FA Cup again — a competition that has done so much to bring his name to the attention of the masses.

He first caught the eye with impressive performances for Luton and this season scored a late winner at Leyton Orient before helping turn a 2-0 deficit at Charlton into a 4-2 triumph.

Doherty added: “The FA Cup has always gone well for me starting back at Luton, where I scored a couple of goals and continuing here where I’ve scored a goal and played quite well at Charlton.”

Meanwhile, George has his Doherty dilemma for Saturday’s tie against Stockport County. He may be needed at the back with Chris Perry injured but then again, with Andy Booth cup-tied and Les Ferdinand and Steffen Iversen just back from injury, he may find himself up front again.

Doherty insisted: “I’ll play wherever I’m needed and just do my best. There is probably not as much pressure on me as a striker because everyone knows I want to be a centre-half but I’ll just try to enjoy it if he does pick me there.”
