Discipline key for Steven

Steven Pienaar has hailed the discipline we showed in booking our place in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League.

Steven Pienaar has hailed the discipline we showed in booking our place in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League.

The midfielder admits defending the narrow 1-0 first leg lead at the Lane was a tough task – especially against an AC Milan side full of attacking talent.

So Steven was happy to settle for sacrificing our usual attacking style to ensure we did not allow the Italians back into the tie.

The South African said: “It’s always tricky to defend a 1-0 lead, so it was important for us to be disciplined and play our own game, even though Milan made it difficult for us, especially in the first half.

“They’re an experienced side and you could see the way they were putting us under pressure from the start. It was important not to concede - if you don’t concede, you don’t lose games, so that was key.

“We played to our strengths. We could have done better going forward, especially since we were the home side, but I’m happy that we went through. That’s the most important thing.”

Steven continued: “It feels great to go through to the Quarter-Finals. Everyone is enjoying the feeling and we’re all happy.

“We’re all excited and it’s a good achievement. Who knows where this run will take us? Hopefully all the way to Wembley!”
