DIMITAR IN THE SWING

Dimitar Berbatov was delighted to get into the swing of things at Spurs Lodge when the players returned to pre-season training last week.

For the boys and the close-season signing from Bayer Leverkusen, it was time to enter into what it traditionally the most intensive period of physical conditioning, but the Bulgarian international appeared to be completely unfazed by the prospect and he was already thinking in terms of the currency he trades in - scoring goals.

The striker scored 21 goals in 34 matches for Bayer in the Bundesliga last season - the second highest goalscorer in the league.

Named Bulgarian Player of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2005, Berbatov has scored 31 goals in 50 senior international appearances.

"I am finding it good, it is training again, but I like that," said the 25-year-old. "It is hard, but I prefer it like that - if you train hard you can play well.

"I've met the guys - I will meet the rest when they come back from vacation - and they have all been very good with me," he added, before admitting a switch of club and country can be a little strange at first.

"I was six years in Germany and I now come to a new country with new people. I know the language and that will help me a lot, but everything is new for me and I will quickly get used to it.

"I hope I can play like I played at Leverkusen.

"I am in a hotel until I find somewhere to live. This is a small kind of problem, I will find somewhere to live, but the most important thing to me is to play and score goals."
