Dier recalls sensational England winner in Germany

22 March 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

Eric Dier only needed two words to recount his stoppage-time winner for England in Germany 12 months ago: “Good times!” he simply said with a smile.

The Three Lions’ friendly in Dortmund tonight (Wednesday, March 22) comes four days short of a year since Eric powered home a stoppage-time header from a corner to complete a sensational comeback victory against the Germans in Berlin, England recovering from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with Harry Kane also on the scoresheet.

It was only Eric’s third appearance for his country and he told us at the time how the chance to celebrate with Spurs pals Harry, Dele Alli, Danny Rose – who was making his senior England debut – and Kyle Walker, the latter on the bench, made his night extra special.

Now, as he readies himself for this evening’s rematch, he hopes to draw inspiration from that memorable night last March.

“They were good times, happy memories for me – it doesn’t seem like a year ago,” said the 23-year-old.

“It’s a new game now, though. England against Germany is always a big match, it’s not really a friendly, so it will be a great game and a good one to test ourselves in like last year. Everyone is really looking forward to it.”

Tonight’s match marks the first in permanent charge for new England manager Gareth Southgate and Eric says he’s happy to operate in either defence or midfield.

Speaking to us before meeting up with England earlier this week, he said: “I’m always happy to play wherever – we’ll have to wait and see what’s required.

“I don’t know what the manager has in store for us but it’s going to be exciting.”
