Development Squad journey begins with tough sessions

Ugo Ehiogu is setting the bar high for our new-look Development Squad.
Like the first team, our Under-21s players reported back to Hotspur Way after their summer breaks last week and have since been hard at work in the gym and out on the pitches in preparation for the 2016-17 season.
With last term’s second-year Academy players now in the fold alongside some of our more experienced Under-21s campaigners, coach Ugo says it’s important that all the boys in the group take their games to the next level.
And, based on what he’s seen in the first five days of pre-season training, he believes the players are heading in the right direction.
“The new recruits are adapting,” he explained. “It’s been tough over the last five days, as it always is in pre-season, but it’s nice because the younger boys have got some of the Under-20s like Luke Amos and Anton Walkes who they’re trying to catch.
“The new lads all realise that the level has gone up from where they were last year in the youth team and that’s what you want – you want them to strive to get better.
“We’re not looking to get them fully fit within the first week – it’s a long journey and the levels of hard work, technique and intensity have all got to be ratcheted up.
“The most difficult thing is going to be the reflection on what the boys think is hard work and playing well. All the things they’ve been used to last year have gone off the scale and we’re now not just judging them by their immediate peers but also to a senior standard.
“It’s a big gap for some of them to bridge and at the moment I’m pleased to say they all seem very willing.”
