Derby display 'sets the tone' - Younes

Tue 30 September 2014, 12:05|Tottenham Hotspur

Younes Kaboul insists we've put down a marker with our performance at Arsenal – and we now have to continue at that level against Besiktas and Southampton this week.

The skipper said we had to 'show strength' at the Emirates after the disappointing home loss against West Brom on September 21.

That desire was certainly on show as we dug in for a point in the first North London derby of the season - Younes, central partner Jan Vertonghen, Hugo Lloris and our defensive unit as a whole all outstanding in the 1-1 draw as we led through Nacer Chaldi before being pegged back.

“The most important thing for myself, the players and the staff is that we showed a strength of mentality, we were strong on the pitch,” said Younes, voted Man of the Match by fans. “After the last game against West Brom, we had to show another face and we did that.

“It was a performance from the heart. If I’m a football fan, a neutral and I watched that game, then I’m happy to see a game like that.

“For the Spurs fans - they must be proud and we’re proud of them as well, they supported us throughout.”

As Younes set out straight away, the key is now to repeat that determination in our second match in Group C of the Europa League against Besiktas at the Lane on Thursday and then high-flying Southampton back in the Premier League and back on home soil on Sunday.

“We move on,” he stated. “This game is done, now we need to focus on Besiktas on Thursday and then a big game against Southampton, who are doing well.

“If we play the same way we did at Arsenal, we should have no problems, but we need to repeat that performance. We have set the tone. From the first whistle, we showed we wanted to do something.”
