Delight for Doc
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Gary Doherty put seven months of injury hell behind him for good with a dream return to international football last night.
The big defender grabbed Ireland's late winner in the friendly against the USA just 12 minutes after coming on as substitute.
'Doc' broke his leg in September and only returned to the Premiership in our 1-1 draw against West Ham on Saturday but was called into Mick McCarthy's squad on Monday following Niall Quinn's withdrawal.
And he didn't disappoint - heading home Steve Staunton's free-kick past his Spurs team-mate Kasey Keller in the USA goal with just seven minutes left.
Boss McCarthy said: "Gary shouldn't really have been here," said McCarthy. "He wasn't going to come. He is a lovely guy - as they all are - and it was very hard when you see him break his leg.
"He thought his season was over, so for him to come along, then get on and score the winner, is the stuff dreams are made of.
"I think his best position is centre-half, although he can be a threat up front because of his height and his eye for goal."
However, McCarthy admitted the World Cup might just come too soon - although he refused to rule him out.
McCarthy added: "I am not ruling anybody out - I can't because of what might happen with injuries. But I have to say it is unlikely, because he has not been in the squad, although it is not impossible."
