Delight for Davies

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

It must have felt like mission accomplished for Simon Davies on Sunday.

Our young midfield prospect has bided his time this season with chances limited in our opening three Premiership outings.

But injury to Stephen Clemence and suspension to Gus Poyet opened the door for the Welsh international against Southampton — he charged right through in the 2-0 victory.

Simon’s trademark forward runs were a feature against the Saints and he capped an afternoon to remember by setting up our first goal and securing the win with the second.

He admits he knew it would be tough after bursting onto the scene last season but now he’s very much back in the limelight.

“I just wanted to play well and show the manager what I could do,” said an always modest Simon afterwards.

“I’ve expected everything that has happened this season. Some great players have come in and I’ve just had to wait for my chance.

“I’d like to think I’ve made an impression. I expected a tough start to the season and I was pleased to be on the bench in our first three games.

“I’ve been patient, I’ve had my chance and it went well for me.”

It took until the 75th minute for Christian Ziege to gather Simon’s fine pass and finish for 1-0 before the 21-year-old made it 2-0 four minutes from time.

Simon added: “They set their stall out and it was hard the break them down.

“They battled hard, we both had chances in the first half but in the second half we got the run of the ball a bit and finally scored the goal that we needed to settle us down a bit.

“That relaxed us, we started to play more football and I was lucky enough to score the second goal.”

And he appreciated the role of the crowd. “They were brilliant,” he said. “Everyone sensed it on the pitch and it was reminiscent of Manchester United last season.

“It’s great when the crowd gets behind us like that. The players responded to it and hopefully they will do it again. They were great and I’m glad we responded for them.”
