DEFOE TO START

Jermain Defoe will start in Steve McClaren's first match as England boss against Greece on Wednesday night.

Jermain Defoe will start in Steve McClaren's first match as England boss against Greece on Wednesday night.

Naming his first starting XI on Tuesday afternoon, McClaren selected Jermain up front alongside Liverpool's Peter Crouch for the friendly at Old Trafford. Paul Robinson also starts in goal.

The news was welcomed by Martin Jol at Spurs Lodge this afternoon. "It's very good news and Jermain deserved it," said Martin. "He's in good form, he's scored plenty of goals in pre-season in difficult matches against good opponents. I'm happy for him.

"He showed a good attitude and took it on the chin when he was left out of the World Cup squad. He's an intelligent boy and he knew his chance would come.

"Steve McClaren is the coach now, he was assistant then and I'm sure he saw what a good professional Jermain is. He's too good to be left out and hopefully he'll prove that."
