Defoe ready for Danes

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Jermain Defoe insists he is ready for England duty - if selected - against Denmark on Wednesday after opening his Premiership account for the season at Portsmouth on Saturday.

The little hitman sealed victory at Fratton Park with his slick second half strike after an Andy Griffin own goal gave us the lead on the stroke of half-time.

It added up to our first win at the venue since Pompey's arrival in the Premiership and our first opening day victory since overcoming Ipswich at the Lane in August 2000.

It was a hard fought encounter in the swirling rain on the south coast and the home side looked more than in the game before falling behind. After taking the lead the lads took control and Pompey appeared to run out of ideas as our passing game clicked into gear. Jermain revealed that taking the lead and progressing from there was part of Martin Jol's pre-match message.

"Before the game the gaffer said to just try and get the first goal and build from there," he reported. "Last season our form away from home was disappointing in a lot of the games.

"This time we have got three points from our first away game and we are delighted with the start. There have been more changes to the squad with the players who have come in and I think we are going places.

"It was hard to get our passing going at first because of the rain, but towards the end we were able to pass it well.

"They got a lot of free-kicks and from set plays they looked dangerous. We dug in there and defended strongly with the boys at the back doing well.

"The result was great for us in the end. In the second half I thought we looked really strong and fit and were able to string a lot of passes together.

"This is not an easy place to come and I think it is a good result."

Jermain now hopes to be given the opportunity to boost his international tally when England take on the Danes in Copenhagen.

"For a forward to score a goal in the first game is great for confidence and, if selected, I'll be ready."
