Dean's big night
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Dean Marney was given a day's notice to get used to the fact that he was going to make his first senior start against Bournemouth - and he described the experience as 'brilliant'.
Slight injuries to a number of regular first teamers opened the door for Dean to join fellow youngsters Lee Barnard and Ronnie Henry in tasting first team action this pre-season.
Colin Calderwood informed Dean of his selection on Wednesday and it took the confirmation of the teamsheet to make it really sink in.
"It was brilliant - I enjoyed it," beamed Dean after the 1-0 win at the Fitness First Stadium. "I got told yesterday by Colin that I was starting and when I saw the teamsheet up I couldn't believe it. I was really pleased.
"It is a lot quicker, more physical, just better all round."
The third division team gave Spurs a tricky pre-season test, but distance and work prevented Dean's family from witnessing his big night.
"It was a tough game, they passed the ball around well and it was difficult. They had a lot of runners going forwards.
"I didn't manage to get any family here. I live in Canvey Island so it's a bit of a trek and my dad's got a lot of work on and couldn't get down."
Dean added that the quality of the players around him gave him the confidence not to be affected by nerves - although he does admit he should have scored in the opening stages.
"Nerves? Not really, because I'm playing with some of the best players in the Premier League and I knew they'd help me out, so nerves weren't really a problem.
"I did alright, I should have got a few more tackles in - but not too bad.
"I should have scored in the first five minutes but took my eye off the ball. I was disappointed straight after, but let it go after that.
"I've learned a lot. Just from the way the players around me are playing and I will learn things off them."
