Dean Richards is well aware of the threat posed by Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips as he prepares to counter the lethal pairing on Saturday.
Dean, expected to be back in the fold after missing the Worthington Cup final in Sunday through being cup-tied, sees the fixture against Sundlerland as crucial to our quest of climbing into the European spots in the Premiership.
"It was disappointing," said Dean of Cardiff. "But you look at the league now and it's another opportunity to qualify for Europe. We've got to get as many points from the remaining games as possible - starting on Saturday."
The big centre-half adds that a home win would be the ideal tonic heading into the Manchester United game and the Chelsea double-header.
"Definitely, especially after Sunday, it will be a huge lift if we can win if we can win and get the points. I can't see why we can't do it through the league. If we can put a run together and get some points on the board."
"Sunderland are not having the best of times at the moment, but they are always a difficult side to play against with the threat up front of Quinn and Phillips. They are always a strong side to play against and they always work very hard.
"Peter Reid's teams always do so it is going to be a big test for us.
"Quinn and Phillips are a great partnership. They've scored many goals for Sundlerland over the past few years. I've played against them for quite some time, even in the Nationwide when I was at Wolves.
"They both bring different problems to defenders, so it's going to be difficult."
Dean concede that he does not often come up against a striker who matches him for height, but he insists there is more to the threat of Quinn than that.
"There is a couple about, Ferguson and Quinn. Players of his build are always a handful. People just look at him as a big target man, but he's so skilful and has got a great touch.
"I remember last year when I played against him for Southampton he scored a great goal that Bergkamp would have been proud of - a chip from the corner of the box. He's not just a target man, he's got great feet.
"These are the opponents you've got to stand up and be counted against. You've got to roll your sleeves up and you know you're going to be in for a battle."
So does Deano think it's harder facing a good biggun or a good little-un?
"A good biggun I think. I don't mind playing against the small quicker strikers either because I'm quite mobile myself. But with the big ones you know you're going to be in for a battle and take a few elbows."
