Daz hints he'll stay

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Darren Anderton has indicated that he wants to stay at Spurs.

Speculation about his future was triggered by Terry Venables’ return to management at Middlesbrough a fortnight ago. Venables actually signed Anderton at Spurs back in 1992 and handed him his England chance when he was national boss.

Anderton was immediately linked as a possible Venables’ target — not least with the fact that the midfielder only has six months of his current one-year extension remaining.

The 28-year-old now meets Venables and Boro at the Lane on Saturday with this to say on the situation: “I know there was speculation linking me with Terry but that only comes from the fact that I’ve played for him before and he picked me for England.

“I haven’t heard anything and all I’m thinking about is playing football, keeping fit and hopefully the club will come and see me soon.” Did he want to stay at Spurs? “Of course.”

Anderton, naturally, has a lot to thank Venables for. “He put a lot of faith in me by paying out a lot of money when I was just a young kid really,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to get to the club in the first place because of him and then, of course, the England team.

“The highlight for me has been playing for England. It’s what everyone dreams of and he gave me my opportunity at that level.

“I think it’s good Terry is back in management. His knowledge of the game is the best I’ve known and if they are struggling and at the bottom of the league he is just the man they need.

“I hold him in high regard, he’s the best coach I’ve worked for and I’m sure he’ll get them out of trouble. Hopefully that won’t start on Saturday.”

Boro arrive at the Lane on the back of beating Chelsea but we will hold few fears after beating Sunderland, Leicester and Liverpool and drawing with Arsenal in our last four home matches.

But Anderton warned: “This will arguably more difficult than recent games against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal because they know they are in big trouble and they are fighting for their lives.

“We will have to be on the top of our game, start well and then hopefully go on to get the three points.”
