Glenn Hoddle has revealed that Darren Anderton is close to signing a new deal at the Lane.
The England star only signed a year’s extension at the start of last season and, like Sol Campbell, is now available on a free transfer under the terms of the Bosman ruling.
Glenn says he is confident the midfielder will commit himself to the new era at Spurs and if he does, it would be like a new signing.
“I am pretty confident his future is going to be here with Spurs,” said Glenn. “We have worked extremely hard - we want Darren here. If he signs then Darren will be like a new player for me.
“I think Darren wants to stay and there are just a few things that we need to iron out before it is done and dusted, but we are very positive that Darren will be staying with us.
“We definitely want him. I want him here. I think I can get a lot out of Darren over the next three years.”
Glenn certainly brought the best out of Darren when he was England coach — including scoring a goal against Colombia in the 1998 World Cup.
He added: “Darren and I have got a good relationship. I brought him into the England squad and he did well for me, and I am excited about getting him back playing for Spurs.
“I think if we can get him playing consistently then the best of Darren Anderton is still to come, and I hope it is going to be with us.
“I want Darren here and I have made that pretty clear to him, and I think we are very close to doing a deal. We need a decision, he needs to know himself and we need to know.”
The midfielder is currently recovering from an Achilles operation.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
