Dawson's Diary - Q

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

AUGUST 4, 2011

Hello again, everyone.

This latest entry into my diary is a Q&A special so I can answer some of the many, many questions that have come in for me already.

As I said, I will try to answer every question over the course of the season.

You can send questions to me at this email address -

What do you like to so when you aren't playing football? And can you tell us about a challenging time in your career and how you got through it? From Charlie, Will and little sister Nora, via email

I'm a summer golfer, so when the weather's fine, I like to play golf. I also like a day out at the races with my family, that's one of our favourite things to do as a family.

Injuries have always been the most challenging time for me and it's the same with all players. You find yourself down because you are missing something that's a huge part of your life. You go in the gym while everyone else is out training and that's tough. Also if you don't perform in matches or have a dip in form. There's no hiding that I suffered a dip under Juande Ramos and you have to show the character to come back from that.

If you had to choose from all your matches as Spurs captain, what would be the stand-out game? From Sam Wilson, Bracknell

AC Milan away in the Champions League last season. It had been a frustrating start to the season for me after getting injured playing for England but to come back and play as many games as I did and to play at the San Siro after missing Inter in the group stages, and then win, that was fantastic.

What is the best and worst bit of training? From Gareth Brayson, Thirsk, North Yorkshire

The worst is always running, without a doubt! Ask 99 per cent of players what one thing they hate about football and it will be pre-season and running. You need it to get fit though. The best? When pre-season is all over! Then you're ready to step out into these fantastic, packed stadiums every week and hopefully get a win. There's nothing better than Monday morning with three points in the bag.

Who is the biggest joker at the club? Mark Tidy, Wirral

There are a few - Robbie Keane, David Bentley, Sandro loves to dance around and for someone who doesn't speak English, he loves to be part of it all and the lads love him for that.

What was your favourite team growing up? From Josh Sander, Boston, USA

Nottingham Forest from a young age, eight or nine, and I was fortunate to be able to go and watch them because they were keen to sign my brother, Andy. I met the great Brian Clough at that time. He had his famous green jumper on and I've still got the picture - myself, my two brothers and him.

What was it like being Gavin out of Gavin and Stacey (TV programme) favourite player? From David O'Brien, Cork, Republic of Ireland

I've met Mat (Horne, who plays Gavin) since and he's a great guy, a Season Ticket Holder at Tottenham. It was strange at the time, Gavin and Stacey was all everyone was talking about and then, all of a sudden, Christmas Day and the Christmas Special and I was in it!! I came into the training the next day and got some right stick because everyone was watching it!

There have been some great captains at Spurs over the years like Steve Perryman, Gary Mabbutt, Robbie Keane and Ledley King. How proud does it make you feel to wear the armband? From Oli Gamp, Hertfordshire

It's very special. I've been here a long time now and when I arrived, Ledley was captain. The respect I've got for Ledley is unbelievable. He's a top-class player and I remember first watching him and thinking 'how am I going to step up to play alongside him?' because he's that good. Luckily, I've played a number of times alongside him since. He really helped me after I arrived. To lead the team out was a great honour.

ellis park

How did the altitude affect you in South Africa? Ellis Park in Johannesburg is the highest international rugby stadium in the world. From Trevor Wiseman, Benoni, South Africa

You don't realise until you start training or playing. It's more difficult to breathe and you certainly feel tired quicker. It's hard to explain, but there is definitely a difference.

Who is the most exciting young prospect at the club? From Joe Forde, Morley, Western Australia

Steven Caulker has impressed me. He made his debut against Arsenal in the Carling Cup last season and did well in the Championship on loan at Bristol City. He's now on loan at Swansea for the season and it will be a big test for him playing in the Premier League. I'm sure he'll do well. Harry Kane's another good prospect, a forward I've played against plenty of times in training, another player who can score goals and holds the ball up well. We all saw what Andros Townsend can do against Charlton in the FA Cup last season, he's also done well on loan. There are a lot of young players at the club who could have a chance. Kyle Walker, Danny Rose as well. They are still young, but it just feels they've been around the first team squad for a long time.

Who is the best striker you've been up against? Petter Bergstrom, via email

I always find that's a tough question to answer. Playing in the Premier League, it's the toughest league in the world and therefore you are up against world-class strikers every week. Different players cause different problems and have different strengths. We've got that in our strikers as well.

Who is the biggest moaner when the weather is bad? Alex Lennard, via email

There are a few, to be honest. I won't name names. I'll be here all day!

What is your favourite M&M peanut colour? From Stuart Robinson, via email

I've got to admit it's not something I've thought about too much. All I'll say is that it's not red!
