Michael Dawson believes the team deserve credit for responding to the challenges of the season by recording a fifth place finish. It turned into a marathon campaign that comprised of 59 games as the boys pushed forward on four fronts before falling at two quarter-final final hurdles and one semi-final in the cup competitions.

League form did not suffer from the exits and no Premiership defeats were recorded after the return against Sevilla at the Lane.

"It is credit to the lads and everyone involved with the Club," said the central defender on our finishing position. "Last year we had a fantastic season and just missed out on fourth spot, which was hard to take, and coming back this season we had expectations to meet.

"We had it all to play for going into the last day of the season this year and, as it turned out, we didn't need that point to get us into Europe but we still went out there and did our job.

"It put us up to fifth position again which is a great achievement," continued Daws, who insisted he preferred the bumper fixture schedule to the 40-game programme of the previous campaign.

"With us finishing fifth having played so many games you have got to say it has been a good season. Of course we are disappointed not to have won anything as the lads want to win trophies. With the squad of players we've got we want to achieve that.

"We haven't yet, but we got to two quarter-finals and one semi. The way we then bounced back in the league from those disappointments shows the character in the squad."
