Daws hails 'fantastic journey'

Michael Dawson has described our maiden Champions League campaign as a ‘fantastic journey’ after it came to an end last night.

Michael Dawson has described our maiden Champions League campaign as a ‘fantastic journey’ after it came to an end last night.

Real Madrid’s 1-0 win at the Lane gave them a 5-0 aggregate victory in our quarter-final tie.

But the skipper is already looking ahead to the remainder of our domestic season and ensuring we are back in the competition next year.

‘Daws’ said: “It’s been a fantastic journey for the boys, and after what we did last season, we deserved it.

“The dream’s over but we have to focus on the Premier League and hopefully get more nights next season like we’ve had.

“It’s where you want to be. Every player wants to play in the Champions League against players that were on show tonight. We’ve been there, done it, and are hungry for more.”

With Real 4-0 up from last week’s first leg at the Bernabeu, the lads were keen to at least go out of the competition on a high.

And ‘Daws’ felt we did that, despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s 50th minute strike separating the sides on the night.

The defender added: “We went out there and did the best we could, tried to put on a performance for the fans and I think we did that.

“After last week, this was going to be an uphill task, but we came out first half, had a couple of chances and a couple of penalty shouts, and we’ll hold our heads high.

“We were hopeful of going out and getting an early goal and I think we had them with their backs to the wall for 20 minutes or so. If we’d got a penalty then who knows? But it wasn’t to be. They’re a top class team and good luck to them.”
