Davies on wing-back role: 'It's a lot of running but that's what you want'

Ben Davies says he’s relishing the left wing-back role.

The versatile Welsh international has been seen galloping up and down the left flank plenty of times of late, combining his more recognised defensive responsibilities with the need to get forward and support our attack from the wide areas.

Having spent the majority of his career operating as a more traditional left-back, or on the left side of a back three with Wales, the 23-year-old admits his current role slightly higher up the pitch represents a bit of a change to what he’s been used to.

But with Danny Rose on the sidelines and Ben enjoying an extended run in the team, the former Swansea City man is full of enthusiasm over his duties on the field.

Asked if he likes his attacking responsibilities within our current formation, he replied: “Of course! It’s part and parcel of the position, trying to get forward and trying to help the team score goals. That’s what you want to be part of at the end of the day.

“I’ve always said that defending is first and foremost for me but it’s a nice little change. It’s a lot of running – that’s what me and Trips (Kieran Trippier) had to do on Sunday (against Millwall) and what we’ve had to do with Kyle Walker over the last couple of weeks but in the end it’s always lovely to get a win.”

So does fatigue come into play for someone like Ben when occupying such a physically-demanding position? “It’s hard work but it’s what you want to do as a footballer, to get as much of the ball as you can out there,” he added.

“You do see it a lot and it’s hard work but it’s great and I certainly can’t complain. With every match that’s going by it’s another 90 minutes under my belt so it’s great, especially when we’re winning games like this.”
