DAVIDS LOOKS AHEAD

Edgar Davids said the focus will quickly shift to next season after the disappointment of missing out on a fourth place finish following the defeat to West Ham.

Edgar Davids said the focus will quickly shift to next season after the disappointment of missing out on a fourth place finish following the defeat to West Ham.

Of course, the circumstances surrounding the final day setback make not securing the coveted spot hard to take for all concerned, but the Dutchman pointed out that the objective of qualifying to play European football next term has been realised.

"Everybody is down and that is normal," said the midfielder. "We hoped to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League, but we didn't play well enough to win and you can see the situation we had to play in.

"We fought until the bitter end but couldn't get a good result.

"Everybody was affected by it and the majority of the team was sick. It is a pity that it had to be on this day.

"We had to dig in and work hard, but they played a bit better than we did. We wanted to play, but it takes a toll on the body if you are up all night feeling bad.

"We wanted to play in Europe and we will do next season and we have to continue the process. Everybody is disappointed with how it ended but we have to focus on next season now.

"It is a positive thing that we were targeting the Champions League and were eager to be a step ahead."
