IN A STRANGE way, you could say that our passing dictated the tempo of the first half on Saturday but then Robert's goal put us on the back foot.
First half, Newcastle didn't really get behind us until they had a corner until about 20 minutes. Up until that time it was a muted St James' Park. It's amazing how games turn and Robert turned the game, no question about it, whatever we did or didn't do defensively. He turned the game and put Newcastle in position to win it.
We had a couple of injuries to deal with at half-time but Newcastle raised their tempo and we couldn't stay in the game. When a team raises the tempo dramatically like that and score in that spell then you have to say, well, I'm afraid that's curtains.
Maybe we didn't have the same pace as them to hit back. They turned us in the second half. They started playing balls behind us, Ameobi ran well, Dyer played a bit further up the field. I thought Ledley King had a very good first half and I'm not sure if Bobby looked at it at half-time and thought that Dyer should play further forward. It was the athleticism of their youthful players, I think, that turned the tempo in their favour.
We needed to stay in the game for a longer period. To be fair, after they scored their second goal, we needed to slowly get back in the game. But it went 3-0 within four minutes and it was difficult. You have to give credit to certain players who had a tremendous second half for Newcastle, not talking one or two, but a few players. The fact is we didn't stay with the game.
Fortunatelty in football another game isn't far away. I know Wednesday we're looking for a response, our supporters deserve a response and hopefully they will get a response. No-one likes losing and no-one likes losing badly.
