Creating opportunities for young women in South Africa

Coaches representing the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation have been running a series of coaching sessions in South Africa as part of the Foundation’s work with Coaching for Hope.

Coaches representing the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation have been running a series of coaching sessions in South Africa as part of the Foundation’s work with Coaching for Hope.

The project, based in the City of Cape Town, is using football to promote gender equality and the empowerment of girls and women. Tottenham Hotspur Ladies First Team coach, Karen Hills, and Foundation coach, Olivia Worsfold, were in Cape Town recently to conduct a coaching course for 30 young women coaches drawn from six disadvantaged communities in the city.

Karen Hills said, “Women’s soccer has been all but non-existent in this community due to a lack of proper facilities and we are hoping to change that with this project. The enthusiasm for football is huge in South Africa and it’s fantastic to be able to see women benefitting through sport.”

Coaching for Hope is an innovative programme that uses football to improve local communities for young people in West and Southern Africa. The charity is based in the UK and uses professional football coaches to deliver their coach education programmes.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has provided coaching expertise for Coaching for Hope Football and Education programmes for the past four years. This has included Foundation Coaches delivering Football and Education programmes in Cape Town, South Africa, and also in Mali, teaching local people basic coaching skills.

In addition, Foundation coaches have been trained by Coaching for Hope to deliver important social messages to young people around sexual health, substance abuse and gender based violence. The courses are also designed to equip young people with basic life skills need to safely navigate the challenges found in impoverished communities.
