Countdown to SA

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

We continue counting down to our tour of South Africa with a three-part series from Spurs hero Gary Mabbutt.

Our long-time skipper and FA Cup winner in 1991 has the honour of being chosen as an ambassador for South Africa's 2010 World Cup bid - extra special for 'Mabbsy' as his wife Kathy is from South Africa, her family is based in Johannesburg and the Mabbutt family are annual visitors.

In the first of this three-parter, Gary takes an overall view of the tour...

I THINK it will be a wonderful trip for the club to South Africa.

The facilities, the training ground and match facilities are all of the highest quality.

As far as the opponents are concerned, Tottenham are up against two of the best teams in Africa.

Orlando Pirates are the current league champions and the Kaizer Chiefs, arguably the better known team, are one of the best supported teams in the world, they say.

As far as Pirates are concerned, they are the champions and have about four or five players in the national side who played against England - the likes of Lekwathi, Mabizela, Manyathela.

People here in England won't know much about them but they are current South African internationals and that makes them heroes in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela is also a Pirates fan and has supported them all his life.

Back to the recent England game, fans might remember Stanton Fredericks, who had a fantastic game against England. He plays for Kaizer Chiefs and they also have two or three players in the national side.

The thing about South African football is they like to play football the way Tottenham like to play football - it's about quick passing, movement and a lot of flair. That's how they like their football. There is a lot of individual skill there.

For people who haven't seen club football in South Africa, they will be surprised with the quality.

Part Two will followsoon...
