Concern for Chris

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

While Chris Hughton is delighted with the goals output in the last four games he admits that amount conceded is the cause of great concern.

Our last four fixtures have yielded a staggering 28 goals, 15 at the right end, with 13 against. All good stuff for the neutral, but something of an emotional roller coaster for staff, players and fans alike.

“Certainly everyone is getting entertainment value from us - and I think Sky should be paying us a bit more money,” quipped the first team coach.

“From an attacking point of view it is fabulous and we look like scoring goals, Jermain has scored four goals in three games and you rarely get a better start than that.

“It is a concern, it is a real concern that we are conceding so many goals. It is a relief when, while we are letting in goals, we are still getting results. Like the Portsmouth game where we let in three and went on to win the game and two at Charlton. The big disappointments have been the Man City and Leicester games where we should have won and didn’t.”

Chris admits that opposing teams will have been lifted by the recent goals leakage, suspecting that even if behind at the break they will have a fighting chance of getting back into games. He added that the defensive stability of early January must swiftly be returned to.

“Probably teams in forthcoming games will be saying they can score goals against us. We’ve got to turn it round and get it back to where we were a while ago — far more solid as a team and not conceding goals. We were not as open and scoring the goals we are now, but were tighter as a unit.

“Whether it is psychological or not, I don’t know. What you do is analyse the games and goals. Of course, all the goals you concede are bad goals and you can apportion blame on individual mistakes and on the team.

“For us it is about eradicating the mistakes, certainly starting on the training pitch and doing what we can to become a tighter unit.

“You have to analyse it all and that is the norm. You have to ask questions of everyone, coaches and players because it is not acceptable to be conceding the amount of goals that we have been.

“If you are winning the games it lessens the blow, but the City and Leicester results are hard to take from a defensive point of view.”
