Hugo Lloris captained France to an emphatic victory over Switzerland as Les Bleus tightened their grip on top spot in Group E at the World Cup on Friday evening.
Our charismatic goalkeeper had to remain alert throughout the contest, notably palming out a fierce long-range effort from Admir Mehmedi on the half-hour mark.
He was beaten on two occasions in the last nine minutes, first when Blerim Dzemaili’s low free-kick squeezed through a gap in the defensive wall and again when Granit Xhaka beat the off-side trap and finished on the volley.
But his side had already made sure of the victory well in advance. Two goals in the space of a minute from Olivier Giroud and Blaise Matuidi put them in command with less than 18 minutes gone, before Mathieu Valbuena made it 3-0 five minutes prior to the break.
Karim Benzema and Moussa Sissoko further extended France’s lead, before those two late goals reduced the arrears.
The next Spurs interest at the tournament comes on Sunday, as first Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli take their places in Belgium’s squad for their Group H clash with Russia (kick-off 5pm) before Nabil Bentaleb’s Algeria take on South Korea (kick-off 8pm) in the same group.
