Colin's rallying call

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood is on a revenge mission in his first competitive local derby as reserve team manager on Monday night.

Even though it was very early on in our pre-season programme, Colin and his young team were left smarting after a 6-0 defeat at London Colney in July.

At Barnet tonight (Monday), the friendly fire is over and it’s down to competitive action — and for Colin it’s all about winning.

"Arsenal are our biggest rivals and irrespective if you play them at youth team, reserve team or first team it’s a game you would dearly like to win.

"We played them in pre-season and they gave us a good thumping so I’d hope to see an improvement in our performance and to see whether the boys have come on from that.

"Like any other reserve game, I don’t really know what the team will be until nearer the time. We’ve a lot of boys away on international duty so, as I said before the Forest game, there is an opportunity for some of the players to stake a claim. Quite a few of them did that against Forest.

The reserves opened their account for the season with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at our new reserve base at Stevenage in a performance they will have to at least match against Arsenal.

"After that result the boys came back with a very good attitude towards training for a while and it certainly lifted everyone up a gear as in as far as that is the standard we have to get to.

"Whatever you think about Arsenal, they have set a standard at first team and certainly I’ve played against them at reserve level and that is a standard we want to get to. They are our biggest rivals so it might grate a little that they are the standard bearers but we have to match them and then overtake them.

"The difference in a player when you feel like you’ve played well individually and collectively is that it puts a bounce in your stride. "Everyone is still congratulating me on my first win as a coach and that’s all very nice, but this will be the real test to see whether or not we’ve come on, whether or not we’ve learned any lessons, whether or not we’ve improved physically and whether or not we can play better as a team."
