Colin on summer session
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Colin Calderwood insists that the mid-summer top-up training undertaken by the players last week served to increase both fitness and team spirit.
Similar to last summer, where the players trained in La Manga, this time three days were spent at the Five Lakes fitness resort and two days back at Spurs Lodge.
The reserve team boss can only see benefits in regrouping for a short spell ahead of the pre-season campaign.
"I think it just brings the group together and you can see a definite lift in team spirit in the boys that were here," said Colin, pointing out that those that have been on national service did not return.
"You've obviously got to recognise that the boys who have been on internationals have played and trained up to recently.
"I think it was quite enjoyable. The weather obviously helped as it has been good. The boys go away and will be leaner and feeling good about themselves.
"We had no injuries so the benefits are there. The only downside is that no other teams do it, so does that make it right or wrong?"
Colin agrees that topping up fitness should take some of the slog of the traditional pre-season and enable the players to hit the ground running and get pretty much straight back into friendly encounters.
"I think so and that is some of the theory behind it. To have seven or eight weeks off without doing anything would make you be very cautious in the first week or so when you do start back.
"Nowadays the majority of people would do something through the summer, but this just brings the group together and the benefit is that you get a real togetherness and the atmosphere has been good."
