Clive's reserve review

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Clive Allen gives his thoughts on how his reserve squad performed last season.

Coach Clive's men won six games on the trot in October and November and lost successive matches only once on our way to fifth place in the Barclays Reserve League South.

Throughout this week, Clive will give his views on how 25 of the squad shaped up last term.

Lee Barnard (17 appearances, 17 goals, 2nd top scorer in league)
Clive: "Right from day one he’s asked lots of questions and was enthusiastic about learning and making himself not only a better player but a better goalscorer. I could see he had ability and was hungry to learn and it’s paid off with the goals he’s scored. When you are a goalscorer you are labelled as one and judged by the goals you score. I felt his all round play improved as well, he got into the right positions and was a constant threat in games, even when he wasn’t playing that well he had a belief that he could score goals. He had a productive season and that was down to the way he listened and learned. He’s worked on his finishing and he’s more clinical now but he’s also getting himself into positions where he can score. At times before that he’d do a lot of work for the team and be in position where he’d help the team but not necessarily help himself in terms of scoring goals. It’s been a very progressive season for him."

Goran Bunjevcevic (12 apps, 1 goal)
Clive: "He has a fabulous attitude and the young players respect him because whenever he comes into the reserve group he does things in the right way. His mentality is very strong because he’s been in the first team squad for a number of years, obviously not a regular first team starter but never lets anyone down whether it’s the reserve group or the first team."

Robert Burch (7 apps)
Clive: "A very, very frustrating season. There was competition for places with Marton Fulop arriving and Nicky Eyre pushing on and his season was disrupted in a big way. It’s important in the summer for him to be fit and well and to get back to his best. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him this season."

Radek Cerny (6 apps)
Clive: "I love his mentality. You could see he used his experience. You mustn’t forget that although he played senior football for a long time, to come into our country and adapt to our football is never easy. We knew if anything happened to Paul Robinson we could rely on him and that’s exactly what he showed us. He has a lot of attributes - a great kicker of the ball, technically gifted and for me, he’s mentally strong as well."

Rodrigo Defendi (22 apps, 2 goals)
Clive: "His first season, he’s learning and it’s a massive learning curve for him. We have to understand the culture shock. He’s 19 and only just missed out on being eligible for the Academy team. At times he’s found it difficult to adjust but now he understands the game better. He’s very competitive, a fantastic header of the ball and has a wonderful left foot. If he can progress in terms of his play with the ball he will have a great future."
