Clive Allen was quick to praise his defence as we hit top spot in the Barclays Premiership Reserve League South with a 1-0 win at Derby County last night.
After edging a scrappy first half, Jamie Slabber grabbed what turned out to be the winner just a couple of minutes after the break.
In an entertaining second half, the home side hit back - driven forward by Danish international Morten Bisgaard - and created a number of chances only for our defence and keeper Marton Fulop to hold firm.
Rodrigo Defendi again played well but Leigh Mills (pictured left) particularly caught the eye on his full debut for the reserves having played Academy football all season since his arrival from Swindon Town in the summer.
Development Coach Clive reflected: "We were under pressure and weathered what was a storm at times but the two young centre-backs were outstanding.
"They were very competitive, played when they got on the ball, which is always pleasing and if we'd have showed that little bit more quality in the final third we could have wrapped it up.
"I told the lads afterwards it was a professional performance. You go away from home, have a difficult game against a good side but produced a great result."
It was third-time lucky on the night for Slabber who has missed one chance from six yards and seen one saved before finally cracking home the winner from a similar distance.
"We had chances, especially when we worked the ball well in the first half," added Clive. "We got it wide, got the ball across the face of goal but just couldn't get the final touch.
"Their goalkeeper made a great stop just before half-time from Jamie, whether it's hit him or he saved it, all credit to him, but we had to keep that going and eventually we got the goal we deserved.
"We then came under some pressure but we handled it well."
