Clive's Clough tribute
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Clive Allen has paid tribute to the late Brian Clough, a man who had an early influence on his international career.
Our now Development Coach was selected by Clough on the legendary manager's one and only England assignment, a youth tournament win in Las Palmas in the late seventies - an experience that certainly made an impression on the young striker.
"I'm sure he will go down in history as one of the greatest managers of all time," said Clive following the news of Clough's passing away on Monday. "We all know at times he was eccentric, but he was a football man who loved the game.
"He was a great goalscorer in his own right although his own playing career was curtailed by injury. He then went on to be, as we all know, Cloughie the manager who showed a fantastic passion for the game.
"I was very fortunate to play for him on his one and only England youth trip, which was as near to managing England as Brian Clough ever came.
"That was an incredible experience, just spending three or four days with him as we did then. I'll never forget that - he was one of the best."
Clive recalls that the famous Clough characteristics and mannerisms were very much in evidence on the trip.
"Absolutely, he was never going to change, he did things in a different way to what the FA had done for many years. He surprised a lot of the FA committee men at that time and they do say, even now, it was probably one of the reasons he didn't become the full England manager.
"I had a great respect for him. I said to the players before our reserve game that the great man has passed away and that he loved the game to be played in the right way. Hopefully they took that on board.
"He always had something interesting to say and you had to sit up and listen. Having worked with him I will always remember his great understanding, passion and love for football."
