Younes Kaboul, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Jake Livermore were amongst our starting XI but the lads lost out to Bobby Burling's close-range header in the 50th minute.
Harry Kane and Dorien Dervite went close as we started at a quick tempo but Chris Wondolowski glanced just wide from Simon Elliott's free-kick as the MLS side gradually got into the game.
Our visitors from California scored the only goal five minutes into the second half when Quincy Amarikwa headed back Elliott's cross and Burling applied the final touch from inside the six-yard box.
Andros Townsend fired over from Dean Parrett's cross and Jon Obika did well to shrug off Ike Opara before forcing a save from Andrew Weber on his near post.
However, that was the last of our clear-cut chances and San Jose might have added a second only for Ben Alnwick to produce the save of the match to tip away Antonio Ribeiro's drive.
"It was a quality game for us," said Development Coach Clive. "San Jose are five weeks into their pre-season programme now and having seen them at West Ham on Monday, I knew it would be a very competitive match for us and that's how it turned out.
"It was just what a number of our players needed. Result-aside, no-one likes to lose, it was a very good game for us."
