Clive on Barney goal-rush
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Clive Allen was happy to heap praise on the in-form Lee Barnard after the striker netted his eighth reserve goal in six games against Portsmouth on Monday evening.
The 20-year-old finished top goalscorer for the second-string last season with six goals, but is moving onto a new level this time around having surpassed that figure already - bearing in mind he missed out on pre-season and the opening game of the campaign following a fractured collar bone.
"Lee is working very hard, he is looking to improve all the time and is hungry for goals," said Clive after the 2-0 win over Pompey at Stevenage. "I feel he is getting more opportunities now than this time last season and, with that and the work he is putting in, he is getting the rewards.
"Full credit to him, he now has a hunger for scoring goals and hopefully that continues."
Clive suspects Barney's outlook has altered from previous seasons, where he tended to drop off the front and link play to the detriment of his own goals tally.
"Maybe, I'd like to think so. We talk a lot about why and how he's getting the chances to score and he is starting to understand it all.
"Like I said, he is looking to learn all the time and that is a great asset. I think he is more composed now when the chances present themselves and we are getting the benefit."
So are the management onlookers taking notice of the goalscoring talent bubbling beneath the first team surface?
"Absolutely, they are always looking at who is doing well and, obviously, people who are scoring - as they are worth their weight in gold. A consistent goalscorer has got to be looked at."
