Cliff Receives Honorary Fellowship

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has awarded an Honorary Fellowship to Spurs legend Cliff Jones.

Our 1961 Double-winning winger received the honour in Swansea on Thursday afternoon, in recognition of his glittering career in the beautiful game.

“As a working-class Swansea boy this award is beyond my wildest dreams,” said Cliff.

“At school I failed my 11 plus and I remember my teacher telling me: ‘Jones, there’s more to life than exams and anyway, your brains are in your feet.’

“As I stand here today, I realise that my teacher was right. Thank you to the University for presenting me with this award and for making me a very proud Swansea Jack.”

Born in Swansea in 1935, Cliff signed for his hometown club in 1952 before coming to White Hart Lane six years later.

During his time with us, he was a key member of our Double-winning side in 1961 and also won further FA Cup honours in 1962 and 1967, in addition to helping us become the first British team to win a European Trophy, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1963.

Cliff played 378 games for us in total, scoring 159 goals, before departing for Fulham in 1968. He also gained 59 caps for the Welsh national team, scoring 16 goals, and represented his country at the 1958 World Cup.

The 79-year-old is included in the Club’s Hall of Fame, the Welsh Football Hall of Fame and the Swansea City Hall of Fame. In 2013 he was inducted into the National Football History Museum Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sport Wales and BBC Cymru.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David was established in 2010 through the merger of the University of Wales Lampeter and Trinity University College, Carmarthen. The University’s Royal Charter 1828 is the oldest in Wales, and it is third behind Oxford and Cambridge in Wales and England. HRH Prince of Wales is the Patron of the University.
