Stephen Clemence agreed that the negatives outweighed the positive news of his return to action at Burnley.
The midfielder was back in first team action for the first time since the final game of last season.
Having battled back from an Achilles injury, 'Clem' faced another battle in the shape of Stan Ternent's inspired Clarets outfit as we crashed out of the Worthington Cup at Turf Moor.
He gave this honest appraisal. "First half I felt fine," he said. "Second half I felt we got strung out as a team and it was difficult.
"I can't really explain what happened. Perhaps we took our foot of the pedal a little, I don't know, certainly not doing what we were doing at the start. They deserved it in the end.
"I know I can do a lot better and I wasn't happy with my performance.
"It was my first game, only my second 90 minutes after playing 90 for the reserves last week.
"I'm not fully fit to the pace you need to be to play regularly in the first team but having said that, I feel I should have done better."
Clem added that the strength of the side would be in recovering at Sunderland on Sunday.
"We've got to forget Burnley," he declared. "Sunderland had a good result against Arsenal, they'll have confidence from that and it will be a tough game, every one is in the Premiership away from home. We've all got something to prove.
"They'll all be working hard and trying to show what they can do in front of the new manager.
"After the result we just had, we have to go and show we've got plenty of character, something perhaps we didn't show enough of at Burnley."
