Clemence seeks to avoid repeat

English Barclays Premiership

Stephen Clemence is hoping to steer clear of a repeat of last summer's pre-season blues. The young midfielder had a disastrous training schedule before the big kick-off last August and did not feature in first-team action until October.

Thankfully, there was no holding him back from that point and he thoroughly enhanced his reputation in long spells when the likes of Darren Anderton, Steffen Freund and Tim Sherwood were injured.

It was a different story in those summer months though. "Those first few months were the most frustrating I've ever experienced," he admitted. "It all started in a pre-season friendly at Millwall, where I suffered the worst blisters on my feet I've ever seen. They kept coming up again every time I ran on them, which meant I couldn't train properly.

"Then, when the blisters finally went, I picked up a groin injury. That meant I missed the start of the season and I had to work my way up through the reserves again. I finally got back into the squad in October. They were little injuries and it was very frustrating, more annoying than anything.

"Anyway, I'm going into this season in a much better frame of mind. Hopefully I'll get a good pre-season under my belt, touch wood with no injuries and try to stay involved. Obviously there are a lot of very good players in my position, but I think I did well when I played last season."

Clemence will join the rest of his team-mates for pre-season training at Spurs Lodge on Monday.
