Clem rams chance home

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Clemence is hoping he’s rammed his way back into George Graham’s starting line-up.

The young midfielder replaced ‘flu victim Steffen Freund to make his first Premiership start of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Derby County.

Oyvind Leonhardsen’s hamstring injury would suggest there is now a place available even if Freund comes straight back in but Clemence is targeting a place in his favoured central position.

He said: “I know Leo is injured but I’d like to think I’ve done enough to stay in the side anyway now. It’s where I want to be.

“I’ve been working hard this season and when I have played I feel I’ve done well so hopefully I’ll stay in the side in the middle of the park.

“I just want to be in the team though obviously centre midfield is my preferred position. I was quite pleased against Derby. It takes a little time to get used to the pace and I know I can do better.”

For the meantime, Clemence was just pleased to be part of a winning side again.

He added: “There was a little bit of pressure on after the last couple of results but I thought especially the first half-hour we could have been four or five up.

“The last 15 minutes of the first half was a bit of a struggle and we lost our shape a bit. A great goal from Stephen Carr gave us the confidence just before the break and we thoroughly deserved the three points.

“There are no easy games in this league though.

“Derby are down there fighting for their lives and we were down there ourselves a couple of years ago.

“We’ve got to remember how far we’ve come in a couple of years. We’ve won a cup and are now a top half of the table side whereas a couple of years ago we were fighting relegation.

“We’ve got to keep going and this can start a little run for us now.”
