Cirencester 0-0 Spurs X1

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood conceded that the pitch at Cirencester's new Corinium Stadium made it impossible for his Tottenham X1 to establish any sort of pattern or cohesion in Saturday's goalless draw.

The newly laid playing surface had yet to knit together, had ruts between the strips of turf and was soft and dusty underfoot.

Colin explained that it was difficult to be critical of his young side in such conditions and takes away the positive - which was a run-out for his young side.

"A lot of the things were right but, unfortunately, the pitch wasn't right," reflected Colin. "If it wasn't for the lines, the grass inbetween was very nice. Even the drainage was a problem, the ground inbetween the turf was very soft - so it was very difficult.

"You couldn't criticise any mistakes that were made, the ball was jumping about all over the place. It was a shame because I thought we would come here to a good pitch. The facilities are nice and once the pitch becomes good it's going to be an excellent little non-league ground."

Despite the conditions, Spurs definitely bossed most of the game against a physically stronger team - particularly in the second half.

"They were a little bit reluctant at the start, to open their legs and run forward. But you can come back to the pitch on that. It's difficult to commit forward when you know a mistake is likely to be made and you have to chase 50 yards back.

"They tried to do it for a period after half-time and I can ask no more of them really. They've got some sort of fitness out of the game, they didn't look like they were struggling or too heavy."

As the pre-season develops, Colin will be able to call on a more experienced group of players, a number of the players on show will form the Academy under-19 side next season.

"Definitely so. It's good for the second year boys to get involved and hopefully they enjoy it. The third years are basically going to be my group along with some senior professionals for the reserve games.

"They've got to take the lead a bit because they are the experienced ones. Paul O'Donoghue took the lead very well, Walter Thomas did well, as did Danny Foster.

"Dean Marney did a nice little job with Mark Hughes in the middle and it's an apology to them really, because I thought the pitch was going to be better than it was."

Team: Jalal (Burch 45), Foster, Thomas (McKie 60), Hughes (Berkmans 60), O'Donoghue (Capt), Bortolozzo (Black 60), Parisi (Slabber 65), Marney (Yeates 65), Sutton (Noto 60), Snee, Galbraith (Wettner 65).
