Birthday boy Christian Eriksen got the party started with our late winner at Manchester City on Sunday, but pinpointed his first touch after Erik Lamela’s through ball as the key moment in our 2-1 victory.
With the game finely poised after Kelechi Iheanacho had cancelled out Harry Kane’s penalty, the Dane – celebrating his 24th birthday – latched onto Lamela’s pass and calmly slotted past Joe Hart to send us within two points of Premier League leaders Leicester.
As our delirious travelling fans celebrated the result at the Etihad, the midfielder reflected on his goal with pride and revealed what went through his mind as he slipped in behind City’s defence.
“The first thing I thought was to find a solution,” he said. “There were defenders around me but I always make that run and believe in it. Luckily, Coco (Erik Lamela) saw me and played a precise pass, my first touch was really important, that was good and that gave me the opportunity to score with my second touch.
“Everything depended on my first touch and luckily that took me into the middle behind the defender so he couldn’t reach me and that gave me the opportunity to go in the short corner or far corner of the net.
“It’s definitely a day I’ll remember and look back on with a happy face!”
Having leapfrogged Arsenal, who beat Leicester earlier in the day, back into second spot, Christian emphasised how important Sunday’s win was and spoke about how tough the players found it against a strong City outfit who are also in the mix in the upper reaches of the table.
“Everyone is confident in what we do,” said our match-winner, who also played his part in our 4-1 home win over City in September.
“This was different from the home game, we needed to work hard that day but not as hard as we needed to work today. It’s a different pitch from the Lane, that makes a difference, and when you come up against a good side like this you have to be at your best.
“We kept them to only a few big chances – okay, they scored and had some opportunities, but not many. We played better football in the first half but the second half was about working and keeping on top of the game.
Yeeeees! Couldn't wish for a better birthday present! Massive win today! Thanks for all the… https://t.co/gFb0DRqGJ7— Christian Eriksen (@ChrisEriksen8) February 14, 2016
“We all want to help each other, work for each other and go through everything with each other. At the end of this game, we got the three points so we can celebrate with each other as well.”
