Chris Hughton recalls that the Republic of Ireland squad is probably as close as you can get to a club side.
The fact that Ireland managers do not have a welter of players to choose from enables them to have a settled side and, as a result of that, a settled pattern of play. Chris reasons that it also helps when it comes to taking on the bigger nations.
"That's always been the case," said Chris. "And if I look back to when I played for the Irish team, it is probably the nearest that an international side can be to what we regard as a club side.
"You had that social sort of togetherness of players. It was, it was almost as if when you played against the bigger nations you had more to fight against. We would always make it hard for them.
"That is part of the reason, for sure."
Chris believes that it also saves the manager from too many headaches when it comes to squad selection for major tournaments.
"Mick McCarthy picking his squad, without being disrespectful to those not included, I don't think it was difficult for Mick to choose.
"There would have been two or three just outside the squad that Mick would have had to think about, but I think it wasn't that difficult for him to pick.
"In some ways it is quite a good thing and certainly solves some of the problems you have."
