Chiv salutes Hall of Fame duo

14 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Martin Chivers has spoken of his delight after the announcement that Mike England and Alan Gilzean are set to be inducted into our Hall of Fame.

We revealed last month that Mike and Alan, who formed key parts of our successful squad alongside Martin during the 1970s, will be honoured at a special ceremony at White Hart Lane on Monday, December 2.

And Martin, who remains the club’s highest goalscorer in Europe following his tremendous eight-year spell in our colours during that successful decade, believes it’s “about time” the pair are recognized in such a way.

“It’s lovely to get them both together and it’s about time they’re inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said Martin, who remains a regular matchday host at the Lane.

“You could do one or the other really, I’m delighted for them.”

Welsh international centre-half Mike joined us from Blackburn Rovers in August, 1966, making 397 competitive appearances, with 19 goals to his name.

He was a key member of Bill Nicholson's squad that lifted the FA Cup in 1967 and went on to win the UEFA Cup in 1972 and the League Cup in 1973. He missed our 1971 League Cup Final triumph through injury, and scored as we lost out over two legs to Feyenoord in the 1974 UEFA Cup Final. He was awarded the MBE for services to Welsh football in 1984.

Scottish international striker Alan, meanwhile, joined us from Dundee in December, 1964, going on to score 133 goals in 439 appearances. He was in the side that lifted the FA Cup in 1967, and later partnered Martin up front in the early 1970s. He played in our League Cup wins in 1971 and 1973, as well as both legs of the UEFA Cup Final in 1972.

“They were great team mates during that fantastic series of the early 1970s,” recalled Martin. “It will be wonderful to see both of them.

“They thoroughly deserve it, it’ll be wonderful.”
