Chirpy stars at Oval’s Mascot Derby

Tue 14 July 2015, 12:17|Tottenham Hotspur

Chirpy flew the flag for Spurs at the fifth annual Mascot Derby at Surrey’s Kia Oval earlier this month.

The event took place in between innings at the recent NatWest T20 Blast match between Surrey and Middlesex.

Chirpy was joined by mascot representatives from a host of different sports sides including Surrey County Cricket Club, Harlequins and Saracens Rugby Clubs, and AFC Wimbledon, Leyton Orient and QPR from the world of football – as well as friendly interlopers from Octopus Investments and Help for Heroes!

The organisers had originally hoped for a rigidly-controlled relay race, genuinely testing the athleticism of mascots from across the capital, but, after the participants undertook a short obstacle course, mayhem ensued and the race had to be declared null and void!

However, with a winner needing to be crowned to maintain the tradition of the event, BBC London’s Johnny Barran spontaneously declared a dance-off, with the reaction of the 20,000+ crowd determining the winner!

Chirpy gave a great account of himself but in the end the winner was named as Haydon the Breakdancing Womble from AFC Wimbledon, who took home the crown!

Rivalries were renewed afterwards with a challenge laid down for the London Mascot Derby VI – next year at the Kia Oval!

Here’s a look at what happened during this year’s event...
