Chesham 1-1 Spurs X1
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
A young Spurs side did themselves great credit with a battling performance against Chesham United at The Meadow on Wednesday evening.
The starting X1 featured eight players from our current Academy crop, along with young reserves Rob Burch, Paul O'Donoghue and Kieran McKenna. They certainly took the game to their physically stronger opponents and there were early chances for goalscorer Danny Stevens and Jamie O'Hara.
O'Hara and McKenna dictated the midfield play in the first half, setting the tempo and spraying passes to pick out the wide runs of Stevens and Charlie Daniels. McKenna gave the home side a scare midway through the opening period when his whipped free-kick from the left deceived the defence and goalkeeper Bradley Hughes scrambled the ball away low to his near post.
Chesham then came close when former Spurs Academy boy Chris Herron fired just over from outside the area. The game then appeared to be meandering slightly towards half-time when a Chesham free-kick from the right was met by a powerful downward header from Pete Clifford and Burch, somehow, not only saved by held on with a stooping stop.
Just before the break we took the lead when a weaving run from Stevens to the right of the area led to the diminutive midfielder creating an opening and he drilled his shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
The second period did not quite live up to the first early on and second half keeper Marton Fulop was called into action with a point blank save to deny Andre Scarlett.
A soft looking penalty was then awarded by referee Mr Simmons when Charlie Lee challenged Fotheringham inside the area. Mark Francis netted his spot kick to Fulop's right.
A late flurry of chances were then carved out by the boys, the pick of which was a Phil Ifil chip that was tipped over by the fingertips of Hughes. O'Hara fired a free-kick just wide before a Daniels run and cross was squared for Simon Dawkins in front of goal, but his first time shot flashed just wide.
