Chelsea U21s 2-4 Spurs - Ramsey's reaction
10 August 2013|Tottenham Hotspur
Chris Ramsey insists our Under-21s have set the bar high after an 'outstanding' performance to beat Chelsea 4-2 on the opening night of the Barclays U21 Premier League.
The squad won both titles in the league’s inaugural season last time around and scored 82 goals in 28 matches, but Chris felt Friday night’s display at Aldershot's Recreation Ground matched anything served up in 2012-13.
Chelsea took the lead in the 18th minute via Josh McEachran’s penalty but the lads soon clicked into gear and just over 20 minutes and a host of chances later, we were 3-1 up thanks to a double from Yago Falque and third from Harry Kane.
Shaq Coulthirst added the fourth goal 10 minutes into the second half and our second flurry of chances arrived either side of Chelsea’s consolation for 4-2, Darren McQueen denied twice one-on-one in the final minutes.
“It was an outstanding performance,” said Chris, our Senior Professional Phase Coach.
“It was one of the best displays we’ve had, even including last season. I’m delighted for the players, especially the way they applied themselves and the resilience they showed after conceding the early goal.
“There were a lot of pleasing things, the more experienced players were great for us while the likes of Giancarlo, Ruben, Alex McQueen and Grant Ward have all come onto the scene this season and they are trying their best to step up and live up to the standards that were set last season
“Well, these players have set a very high standard in the way they performed."
