Carr's pride

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Carr felt a huge sense of pride pulling on the green jersey of the Republic of Ireland again on Wednesday.

The all-action full-back returned to the international fold for the first time since June 2001 in Ireland's 2-0 win against Scotland.

Arguably the best full-back in the Premiership at the time of his last cap, Steve was ruled out with a serious knee injury for all of 2001-02 before a hamstring tear on this season's opening day sidelined him for another three months.

"It was a very proud moment for me," reflected Steve back at Spurs Lodge. "It's been nearly two years since I last played for Ireland so it was good just to get it out the way to be honest and do okay. I really enjoyed it and the result helped as well."

Twenty days can be a long time in football so perhaps it's no surprise that Steve walked into a completely different set up 20 months after his last cap.

"It happens in football," said Steve, ever the realist. "Two years is a long time and things will change. Hopefully it's for the better. Only time will tell.

"It's important that the manager and Chrissie (Hughton) have time to stamp their authority on the team and what they want.

"Hopefully it's the start of good things to come because we have to win our next couple of games in the qualifiers. There is no point even drawing those games, we have to go out and try to win every game.

"There is no reason why we can't do that. We've competed against the best teams in Europe before and done it and it's all about getting the confidence up again.

"Now a few things have been sorted out, maybe it's time to move on."
