Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Michael Carrick sees Saturday’s friendly against FC Porto as a yardstick in terms of our future involvement in European football.
The European champions of 2004 arrive at the Lane for our final pre-season friendly before the big Premiership kick-off next weekend.
Porto's class of 2003-04 has split up somewhat with the likes of manager Jose Mourinho, Deco, Ricardo Calvalho, Paulo Ferreira, and our own Pedro Mendes all departing after that final success over Monaco in May 2004.
However, there are still plenty of international-class names on the roster including Portuguese internationals Ricardo Quaresma, Ricardo Costa, Nuno Valente, keeper Vitor Baia, South African star Benny McCarthy and former Spurs striker Helder Postiga.
“They gave Arsenal a good game in the Amsterdam tournament and it will be a tough match for us,” said Michael.
“They are not the same side that won the Champions League but they are still a top-quality side in Europe and if we want to play in Europe it will be a good test as to how far we’ve come.
“It will be similar to the games in South Korea. They weren’t like Premiership games, more like games on the continent and in a way that suited us.
“We’ve a lot of ball players in the team and we keep possession well. Having said that, the structure of the team is set up now so we can defend as well
“It will be a big test for us and hopefully we’ll get a win to go into the season.”
In light of current events, the Club respectfully requests that supporters arrive earlier than usual for matches as increased searching will be taking place at the turnstiles. Furthermore, we would ask that large bags are not brought to the Stadium for the foreseeable future. We thank you for your co-operation.
