Carrick's feet on the ground
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Michael Carrick insists he’s not getting carried away despite the rave reviews that followed his excellent displays for England in the USA this summer.
After four years in the international wilderness, the midfielder received a late call-up into Sven Goran Eriksson’s squad for the end-of-season tour of the States.
And he grabbed his opportunity with both hands - performing well against America before earning rave reviews against Colombia. BBC pundit Alan Hansen described his display in the holding midfield role as ‘perfection’ and named him as the big plus of the tour.
Michael’s next target on the international front is to be named in the squad for the friendly against Denmark on August 17.
Back in pre-season training this week, Michael reflected: “At the end of last season I wasn’t even thinking about getting into the England squad, I was just concentrating on trying to get us into Europe.
“A lot of people kept asking me about England but I didn’t really want to talk about it too much, I just wanted to play well for Tottenham and see where it took me.
“Things happen, different situations come up and now I’ve given myself half a chance of being in the next squad and I’ll see what happens. We’ll have to wait and see.
“To go out to America, play both games and win both of those games was great for me but two games don’t make a career.
“I did okay in those games in and I’m delighted about that, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just a start and I’m looking to getting involved in the next squad and progress from there. I’m not getting too carried away at the moment."
At the same time, Michael agreed that the World Cup was back on the menu as he prepares for the season at Spurs.
"When you are with the squad people are talking about plans for the World Cup and everything is geared up for that, so just to be involved makes you think about it," he added.
"It is something I want to be striving for this season.
"It’s great that people have said nice things about me but the way I look at it is that’s in the past and I have to move on. Hopefully I’ll get into the next squad and take it from there."
