Carr starts well

English Barclays Premiership

Stephen Carr is not getting carried away with our defence's unblemished start to pre-season.

We've yet to concede a goal in five friendlies after a comfortable three games in Scandinavia and two tougher tests against Birmingham City and Fulham.

Irish international Carr, player of the season last time around, insisted: "We take confidence from keeping clean sheets but I wouldn't get carried away. We're not losing games but there will be a lot of difference between friendlies and the start of the season in the Premiership.

"It's good to get into good habits and not concede goals. We can still get a lot tighter defensively.

"In the second half of last season the gaffer outlined to us that we conceded too many sloppy goals. But there is a bit of depth now in the squad for players to come in and out. Mauricio Taricco and Luke Young have done well and the centre-halves are covered as well with young lads coming through, so it's looking good.

"The back four are determined to keep clean sheets when we go out there and it is nice when you come off having done that. We have the quality of players to be able to nick a few goals so if we do our jobs, we'll always be picking up something rather than losing. It is very important."
