Carr on future

English Barclays Premiership

Stephen Carr has exclusively told the Official Spurs Website that he would love to stay at the Lane - but at the same time, has to look after himself as well.

The popular full-back - who has four years left to run on his present contract - is due to enter into talks with the club over the terms of a new deal. Our director of football David Pleat, having confirmed Steffen Iversen's extension, also revealed last week that the club would now be looking to do something for Carr.

Irish international Carr's contract has been the subject of much speculation in the media lately. Indeed, reports in Sunday newspapers suggested that we would treble his wages with both Liverpool and Manchester United monitoring the situation.

Naturally, Carr did not want to talk figures but did confirm that he was set to sit down with the club - and why.

Last season's Player of the Year admitted: "I want to stay at the club. I've been here eight years, I love it here and I'm very comfortable here. It's in the club's hands and we'll open negotiations and see how that goes.

"You can be as loyal as possible but at the end of the day footballers are not in the game long enough and you have to look at what is right for you. It's all ifs and buts at the moment but I would like to say that the club has been brilliant to me. That's why I signed a big deal 18 months ago. I think I've done okay in the last couple of seasons though, the club know that and I think it should be rewarded. To be fair, they know that as well.

"Hopefully everything will turn out alright. I'm sure it will. I love being at the club but as I said, in this game you have to look after yourself as well."
